This December’s Wreaths Across America ceremony will be especially meaningful because of our country’s upcoming 250th birthday next year.
Everyone is invited to attend and participate at the Marco Island Cemetery, December 13th beginning at noon. The sponsors are Marco Island Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), American Legion Post 404, and New Life Community Church.
The local program includes prayers, patriotic songs, remarks by organizers, Lely’s JROTC posting of the colors, and a thrilling airplane flyover by the Marco Civil Air Patrol, and lots of red, white, and blue.
The Marco event is one of about five thousand such ceremonies around the world. Last year, more than three million wreaths were placed by volunteers on the graves of veterans across the U.S., at sea, and in countries around the world.
Volunteers place a wreath at each grave, saying the name of the veteran aloud with thanks for their service. Approximately 160 military veterans are interred in the Marco Cemetery, going back to the Civil War.
The purpose of Wreath Across America ceremonies is to “REMEMBER the Fallen, to HONOR those who Serve and to TEACH our children the value of Freedom.”
