Technology with a Human Touch

Posted

When people hear words like artificial intelligence, robotic surgery, or advanced imaging, it's understandable that some may picture a future where machines replace people. Fortunately, in health care, nothing could be further from the truth.

Recently, I sat down with Jason Peterson, System Manager of Outpatient Surgery Services at Physicians Regional Healthcare System, to talk about the remarkable advances happening inside our hospitals.

While Jason oversees some of the most sophisticated medical technology available today, what impressed me most wasn't his knowledge of robotics or AI—it was his unwavering focus on people.

Jason's journey into healthcare began nearly 30 years ago when he enlisted in the U.S. Navy immediately after high school, serving as a hospital corpsman before becoming a surgical technologist.

He later advanced to the role of Certified Surgical First Assistant, earned both a bachelor's degree in healthcare management and an MBA, and has now been accepted into a Doctor of Health Administration program. Throughout every step of that journey, one mission has remained constant: helping patients achieve better outcomes.

That mission is exactly what drives Physicians Regional's investments in technology.

Take robotic surgery, for example. Contrary to what some may believe, the robot doesn't perform the operation. It doesn't make decisions, make incisions or act independently. Every movement is directed by an experienced surgeon. The technology simply provides greater precision, improved visualization and wrist movements beyond human capability, often resulting in smaller incisions, less pain, reduced blood loss and significantly faster recovery for patients.

Artificial intelligence is creating similar scenarios

Though many people wonder whether AI might eventually replace medical professionals, Jason quickly puts that concern to rest.

"AI can never replace the human component," he explained. “Instead, it serves as another set of highly trained eyes.”

During procedures such as colonoscopies, AI software can highlight areas that deserve another look, helping physicians identify abnormalities they might otherwise overlook.

In radiology, advanced AI algorithms help detect subtle findings that may not be immediately visible to the naked eye.

"Most importantly, AI can help reduce the chance of overlooking something important, but the physician always makes the final diagnosis and treatment decisions."

As Southwest Florida is a collection of people from a variety of professions, I appreciate Jason's comparison to other professions. For example, a chef needs the right knife. A carpenter needs the right saw and level. Healthcare professionals also need the right tools.

Patients don't have to understand every technical detail behind these tools. What matters is knowing their physicians have access to the best technology available to provide the safest, most effective care possible.

Whether introducing students to surgical robotics through Physicians Regional’s educational outreach programs or helping patients understand the care available, Jason understands that knowledge empowers confidence.

Many people don't realize the advanced technology and specialized expertise available right here in Southwest Florida. Increasingly, patients can receive world-class diagnosis and treatment without leaving our community.

Physicians Regional Healthcare System’s three Naples hospitals provide quality care to the Naples and the greater Southwest Florida community with the objective of offering more options and improved access to healthcare for all citizens and visitors.

Our hospitals and more than 800 physicians are recognized within their fields, offering advanced medical care in more than 45 specialties and subspecialties, including programs in 24-hour emergency care, cardiology, vascular disease, digestive diseases, orthopedic care, spine care, neurosurgery, and women's services.

Perhaps my favorite part of our conversation came when I asked what truly motivated him. Jason admitted he isn't simply a "technology guy." His passion isn't about gadgets or being first to adopt the newest innovation. It's about discovering which advancements genuinely improve patient care and ensuring our physicians have the resources they need to deliver exceptional outcomes.

That perspective perfectly reflects who we strive to be at Physicians Regional.

Technology will continue evolving at an extraordinary pace. New robotics platforms, AI-assisted diagnostics and innovative treatment options will continue to transform medicine.

Our responsibility is to carefully evaluate those advances, invest wisely and ensure every innovation serves one purpose above all else: improving the health and lives of the people we serve.

Because at the end of the day, technology isn't the story.

People are.
