Public Invited to AAUW Meeting

Posted

The Greater Naples Branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) will hold a meeting open to the public on Saturday, November 7, 2026. The keynote speaker will be Professor James Chan from Florida Southwestern College (FSW), and he will discuss AI in everyday life.

The meeting will be at the Collier County Education Association (CCEA), located at 6710 Lone Oak Blvd, Naples, FL 34109. Refreshments will be available at 9:30 AM, with the program starting at 10:00 AM. There’s no fee for attendance; all are welcome, and pre-registration is not required.

A Professor of Mathematics and chair of the Academic Technology Committee at FSW, Chan teaches in a hybrid style; his students choose if they want to attend class in-person or through Zoom. Recent federal accessibility requirements led to Professor Chan revamping his course to meet those standards. In doing so, he had to get more familiar with HTML and other markup languages. Since this was new to him, he decided to use AI to assist with the task. Today he uses AI as a daily "digital Swiss Army Knife" to summarize complex meeting minutes, convert PDF files for Canvas, and draft everything from quick emails to letters of recommendation.

Professor Chan believes that AI isn't just for tech geniuses; it’s a tool that will soon help all of us save time and achieve more in our daily lives. As a self-described "regular Joe" who has “even taught my mother how to harness the power of AI,” he will demonstrate that if you can have a conversation, you can master this technology.
