On Wednesday, June 17, Mackle Park hosted a morning with the Marco Islands Police Department (MIPD). This was a wonderful, well-organized event for the Mackle Parks Summer Camp kids to learn about the safety resources available on Marco Island. Camp Mackle has been preparing its summer schedule, balancing fun, crafting activities for the kids to enjoy, while learning manners, patience, communication, and safety. All categories were displayed in the MIPDs' open floor presentation on what they were sharing with the campers. MIPD brought in fingerprint pamphlets to make their presentation engaging. Also, MIPD never forgets to bring goodies for the kids, from play badges, wrist bands, frisbees, and drawing utensils - you name it, they had it!
MIPD officers also took time to answer campers’ questions about personal safety and making smart decisions in everyday situations. Through interactive discussions and real-life examples, officers taught children how to recognize potentially unsafe situations and what steps to take if they ever feel uncomfortable or unsure. Campers learned the importance of seeking help from a trusted adult, teacher, parent, or first responder whenever something does not feel right. By presenting safety lessons in age-appropriate language, officers helped the children better understand and remember these important skills. The session reinforced MIPD’s commitment to creating a safe and supportive community for families on Marco Island. Officer Ray Leshinger emphasized the importance of connecting with young residents, saying, “This is an awesome opportunity to help the kids; it's always about the kids—to keep them safe and educate the next generation.”
Mackle Park campers were filled with excitement as they got the chance to dip their fingers in ink and create their very own fingerprints, learning firsthand how the process works.
Officers explained that every person's fingerprint is unique, helping identify individuals. The campers were especially thrilled to meet the giant inflatable teddy bear, which quickly became the star of the visit. Children lined up to give it hugs, high-fives, and plenty of attention throughout the event.
MIPD officers were impressed by the thoughtful questions the campers asked and repeatedly shared how much they enjoyed hearing from the younger generations. The visit proved to be a successful; officers had the opportunity to mingle with staff and campers, while the children got to meet the men and women behind the badge, sparking inspiration and giving them the chance to connect with some of Marco's everyday heroes.
