They were sweaty, exhausted, frustrated by loss of kitchen appliance from flooding, and facing the daunting challenges of recovery from back-to-back hurricanes, Helene and Milton. As the piles of debris accumulated along the streets and as the workers streamed onto the islands, the residents were working together and trying to keep their game face on as the hard work began.
Having food to eat and having to take time for meal preparation from restoring their homes, the Capri residents were not looking forward to balancing all the responsibilities.
Through the local network, news@islesinsider.com,they learned breakfast, lunch, and dinner were being served at the Capri Community Center.
Community volunteers set up tables and chairs out front with the sudden appearance of a sophisticated outdoor cooking/grilling apparatus and a canopy as pictured in the photos.
A low profile but profoundly impactful organization called Marco Patriots appeared at the community center. Most residents were unaware of the efforts of this group, but they quickly learned these were new best friends. (Further information can readily be found at marcopatriots.org. Who are they? This group of caring individuals are, “…a non-political, volunteer-based, disaster response and community service group based in Marco Island, Florida. Through volunteers, Marco Patriots seeks to reignite the spirit of community through service to underserved communities affected by disasters”.
While volunteers from the local group were active here, others dispatched themselves to Asheville, N.C. And similarly stricken areas. At the October Capri Community, Inc Board meeting, the goodwill and appreciation for Marco Patriots was expressed by all members who spoke so gratefully for this “……spirit of community service”.
