Sunny skies and a cool breeze greeted runners and walkers who arrived at the YMCA for the fifth annual Fun Run and Walk. This Halloween-themed 5k was extra sweet this year with the inclusion of a costume contest!
Adults and children alike dressed in their best, adding some not-so-spooky fun to the 5k. After check-in, the competitors moved to the judges’ table where Marco Island Charter Middle School Principal Dr. Scott Nicklas, Marco Island City Councilor Deb Henry, and YMCA Volunteer Cindy Dohm judged on creativity, effort, and theme.
A witch, Olive Oil, Elsa and Olaf, Dracula, a cow, a ghost, and even The Little Engine that Could were a few examples of the many characters attendees dressed up as while they laced their shoes.
Gulf-Coast Runners provided the Chip-Timed portion of the 5k to accurately track each participant’s time. Tropical Smoothie Café brought complimentary smoothies to refresh everyone upon completion, and the MIA Key Club members could be seen volunteering throughout.
Another first this year was the Marco Island Noontime Rotary’s assistance with the costume contest and race-day duties. Over a dozen members arrived early to help facilitate the event’s success.
As the start time approached, YMCA’s Director of Development John Riley expressed his appreciation for the numerous volunteers who came out so early, along with the many sponsors who contributed to make the day happen. “I love seeing the costumes and the energy,” said Riley. “That is what it is all about – building community relationships. This is just one of so many programs that we do to bring people together, and it’s so fun.” He said they were excited to raise a little money for the programs, helping to make sure things are kept affordable at the Y. He also thanked the police officers who were helping that day to keep everyone safe.
Before the sneakers hit the pavement, participants were reminded to stay hydrated, rest when needed, and to stay alert on the course. The race commenced shortly after 8:30 AM.
Once everyone had finished, received a well-deserved medal, smoothie, and a goodie bag, the judges took to the mic to announce the winners of the costume contest.
First, second, and third place in the adults category went to participants dressed as The Little Engine that Could, Olive Oil, and Poison Ivy.
For the children, prizes were given to the top three, which comprised a Ghost, Elsa, and Dracula.
Program Director Reilly Smith, who played a large role in the planning of the event and ensuring the day ran smoothly for all involved, was all smiles as she took in the fun. “It is always great to see the community come together for our 5k event and to support the Y,” said Smith. “It was especially fun this year to see the amazing turnout for the costume contest!” Setting her sights ahead, she added, “I look forward to next year to see the participation grow for the costume contest and the 5k as a whole.” She expressed her personal thanks to all the volunteers, sponsors, Noontime Rotary, Tropical Smoothie, and the Y staff and members. “It could not have happened without them.”
Shortly after the Fun Run and Walk, the YMCA transitioned into its annual Open House offering tours of its campus and the new Healthy Living Center. The Youth Development Center became the hub for its highly anticipated Boo-Tacular, with the children’s favorite Pre-K and after-school teachers dressed up in Halloween Spirit!
The Boo-Tacular was yet another hit filled with carnival-style games, arts and crafts, and lots of yummy food!
