‘Flags for Heroes’ is an annual event organized by the Rotary Club of Marco Island Noontime. This year, 440 flags were planted and proudly displayedat the corner of San Marco Road and Sandhill, where they will remain through February 20. Each flag is commemorated in honor of a ‘hero.’ The designated hero might be a close relative, someone who served in the military, a neighbor, or a friend. Or it could be our first responders or an organization you deem worthy.

The Marco Island Police and the Marco Island Firefighters, our local heroes, made a grand arrival announced by their lights and horns. A prayer was offered by Pastor Ed Brandt from United Church of Marco, followed by the presentation of colors by theHonor Guard of the Naples VFW Post 7721. A “Star Spangled Banner” video preceded the National Anthem and Pledge of Allegiance. An Armed Services Medley was performed in recognition of active-duty members and veterans. Closing the ceremony was a touching rendition of ‘Amazing Grace’ by Bruce Kane on bagpipes and ‘Taps’ by Craig Greusel on trumpet.
The Grand Event sponsor was Michael Montgomery, President and Founder of Hydrologica, in honor of Matt Montgomery, U.S. Air Force. “A huge thank you goes out to Michael,” said Sandlin.“He supports our community’s critical needs with his sponsorship, as well as providing clean water to developing countries around the world.” Other major sponsors included Detlef and Alicia Rethage, the Burrow Food and Bar, Alan and Linda Sandlin - The Sandlin Team, and Stan’s Idle Hour in Goodland.
The true spirit of the event can be felt at the flag site whenever someone stops to admire the flags, reads a commemoration medallion hanging from a flag, or whenever they take a photo. With 440 flags recognizing our personal heroes, the site is impactful.
