Marco Island Academy didn’t follow the Homecoming blueprint of scheduling a weak opponent for an easy win on Friday, October 25. Instead, they hosted a tough Saint Stephen’s Episcopal team from Bradenton who scored early and often in a 62-0 whitewash. The ending was punctuated by a sprinkler malfunction that soaked players and fans as time expired at Winterberry Park.
One game official couldn’t help but think he was jinxed. “I was here last year when the transformer blew,” the beleaguered official said. A year ago, a transformer explosion filled the sky with fire and left the crowd in complete darkness partway through the third quarter of the Rays’ game with Babcock Ranch. The game was called and the Rays lost that one 13-6.
The highlight of the night for Rays fans came at halftime when Sarah Friedhoff was crowned Homecoming Queen and Sam Montgomery was honored as Homecoming King. Friedhoff is a setter for the volleyball team and Montgomery is a standout player for the football team.
On the field, the Rays were no match for the Falcons, who led 35-0 at the end of the first quarter and 55-0 at halftime. The second half was played with a running clock.
The Rays (2-3) travel to Winter Haven to face All Saints Academy (2-4) on October 2 at 7:00 PM. Saint Stephen’s hosts Canterbury (5-0).
