Marco Cruise Club Members recently completed the second of two cruising events of this season. The first being in February to the Pink Shell Marina Resort located in North Fort Myers. The second to Boca Grande on Gasparilla Island and the Outer Islands.
Gasparilla Island is accessible by car over the Boca Grande Swing Bridge or by boat via the Intracoastal route or outside via the Gulf. Some members made the journey by land and others by sea. And as always the journey by land or sea did not disappoint. These outer Islands off Fort Myers are considered to be Southwest Florida’s hidden jewels.
On the third day members headed out to Cabbage Key. It was a perfect day for a short cruise to the Outer Islands. Their destination was approximately 20 miles northwest of Ft. Myers and five miles south of Boca Grande, directly across from marker 60 on the Intracoastal Waterway. Sanibel and Captiva islands were eight miles to the south. Members had lunch at the historic restaurant and then hiked up the lighthouse to catch an even better view of the Outer Islands.
And did you know that the island named Cabbage Key was previously known as Palmetto Key and Rinehart's Island? But after the Stults family acquired it in 1944, they legally changed the name to Cabbage Key. The island is known for its many cabbage palm trees, which are a prominent feature of the landscape, and is the official state tree of Florida. The Cabbage Key Inn and Restaurant and surrounding buildings were built by mystery writer Mary Roberts Rinehart and her son in 1938.
A BIG Thank You goes to event Captains Dan and Judy Lange for planning the Boca Trip. A lot of hard work goes into the planning and managing of these trips, and everyone appreciates the effort. It is not an easy task. The Captain's meeting held prior to their departure included discussions with all captains as to alternate plans for departure to dodge a cold front. It worked.
And now, as always, everyone is looking forward to what is coming up next. That being two more cruises scheduled in April and May both to the Florida Keys.
