On May 27th, standing beneath the final steel beam before it was lifted into place, supporters, clinicians, and community leaders gathered to celebrate a milestone years in the making.
During the beam signing ceremony for the R.M. Schulze Family Heart and Stroke Critical Care Center, Paul Hiltz shared the Scandinavian origins behind the tradition of beam signings and topping out ceremonies. Centuries ago, communities would gather when a building reached its highest point to recognize the craftsmen bringing it to life, while also symbolically wishing good fortune and protection over all who would one day walk through its doors.
Because it has always been about the people whose lives will intersect here someday. The patient arriving in crisis. The family waiting beside them. The physician delivering lifesaving care. The care teams offering reassurance in the middle of a long night.
This special moment reflected the collective commitment of donors and caregivers who believe exceptional heart and stroke care should be available close to home.
As construction continues toward the center's planned 2027 opening, the signatures serve as a lasting reminder that this future is being built together. With $35M remaining to be raised to complete the project, collective support from our community will touch countless lives across our region.
