I wanted to share some thoughts to give you and our community perspective on the value of supporting Marco Island Charter Middle School. Understanding the difference between a Charter School and a Public school: MICMS is a Charter school proudly serving an intentionally small population of students in our community. This allows us to give the special and individualized attention and connection to our students that often can be lost in the crowd at a larger school. Middle School is such a defining and important developmental stage for students at this age; that setting the right tone at this time can pay dividends as students navigate the high school experience. As a charter school, we are given an important opportunity: greater autonomy to build a distinctive educational experience for students. With that autonomy comes greater accountability. We must show that our choices make a meaningful difference in children’s lives.
Our mission is larger than helping students complete middle school. We want them to leave our school confident, capable, supported, and prepared to succeed in high school and beyond.
Public funding provides the foundation for instruction. Yet, as an independently operated Charter School, we must also manage costs that larger district systems can spread across many campuses, such as transportation, insurance, technology, facilities, utilities, staffing, compliance, and financial oversight. Some public dollars we receive are also restricted to specific purposes and cannot be shifted to address every student or school need.
That is why community fundraising matters.
Fundraising helps provide the opportunities that make a lasting difference: current technology, athletics, clubs, enrichment, arts, teacher development, academic support, counseling, transportation, and campus improvements. These are not luxuries to the young person discovering a talent, finding a mentor, joining a team, or realizing for the first time that success is within reach.
Every contribution we receive says to a child: You matter, your education matters, and your community believes in your future.
We invite our community to partner with us. Together, we can help ensure that our students leave middle school not only ready for the next grade, but ready for the opportunities and challenges that lie ahead.
