United Church of Marco Island (UCMI), together with its community outreach ministry, the Bargain Basket, recently presented a $5,000 grant to support the American Sign Language (ASL) program, represented by Kimberly Nussbaum.
The grant reflects the church's ongoing commitment to building a more welcoming and inclusive community by supporting programs that foster communication, understanding, and accessibility for individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing.
In addition to providing financial support, United Church of Marco Island hosts ASL classes on its campus, offering members of the congregation and the broader community an opportunity to learn basic American Sign Language. These classes help bridge communication barriers while encouraging greater awareness and inclusion.
"Learning even a few signs can make a tremendous difference in helping people feel seen, valued, and included," said Rev. Dr. Ed Brandt, Senior Pastor of United Church of Marco Island. "We are delighted to partner with Kimberly Nussbaum and the American Sign Language program in expanding opportunities for communication and strengthening relationships throughout our community. This grant is another way we seek to live out our mission of celebrating God's presence while serving all people."
Kimberly Nussbaum expressed appreciation for the partnership and the church's commitment to accessibility and education, noting that the support will help expand opportunities for individuals interested in learning sign language and increasing awareness of the Deaf community.
The Bargain Basket, a ministry of United Church of Marco Island, provides financial support each year to numerous nonprofit organizations serving Marco Island and Collier County. Proceeds from donated merchandise are returned to the community through
grants that support education, health care, human services, youth programs, and other vital community initiatives.
"Every purchase and every donation made at the Bargain Basket helps make grants like this possible," Pastor Brandt added. "Together, our congregation, volunteers, donors, and shoppers are making a lasting difference in the lives of our neighbors."
