Sea Turtles Nested on Sand Dollar Island

Posted

Finally, sea turtle monitors recorded two nests on Sand Dollar Island, giving Marco a total of two nests for the past week. On one nest, she crawled over an escarpment greater than 18”, and on the other one, the escarpment was less than 18”. Monitors also recorded 15 False Crawls (up from the same period last year), with three false crawls on the main Marco beach and 12 false crawls from Sand Dollar Island.

One important note on escarpments – some can be sloped and climbable, while others are too steep to climb. In addition, the height and slope can be altered quickly by high tide or aggressive wave action due to storms.

According to the 2024 Sea Turtle Annual Report, there are typically two peaks of sea turtle emergences (nests and false crawls) for each season. For the 2024 season, the peaks occurred in the last week of May and the third week of June. In the next couple of weeks and through June, if the 2024 nesting trend continues, Marco Island should expect more nesting activities along our beaches.

Marco Island - let’s keep it dark; let’s keep our beaches flat and clean and fill in those holes!
