Rotary Marco Noontime: Transforming Lives of Children with Clubfoot

Posted

Clubfoot is the most common skeletal deformity among newborns worldwide, affecting approximately 175,000 to 200,000 children each year across all countries, regardless of social, economic, or ethnic background. If left untreated, the condition can lead to lifelong disability, often resulting in poverty, neglect, and limited opportunities.

Thanks to modern medicine, clubfoot is highly treatable. The Ponseti Method, developed by Dr. Ignacio Ponseti at the University of Iowa and recognized globally as the gold standard—including by the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons—is a low-cost, non-surgical treatment that corrects the condition in most cases within 4–6 weeks. The process involves gentle manipulation and a series of casts, followed by the use of a brace to maintain correction and prevent relapse.

In support of eliminating clubfoot disability worldwide, the Rotary Club of Marco Island Noontime, along with generous community members, raised $30,000 in 2019 at their annual Spirit of Marco Island Gala. These funds were matched by the Clubfoot Rotary Action Group, doubling the total to $60,000.

As a direct result of this effort, more than 600 children in Nigeria received the braces necessary to complete their treatment and walk toward a healthier, more independent future.

“The generosity of our community is truly inspiring and a powerful reflection of the ‘Spirit of Marco,’” said Linda Sandlin. “Together, we are helping give children the chance to live full, active lives.”

The Rotary Club of Marco Island Noontime continues to make a significant impact both locally and internationally through a wide range of humanitarian initiatives.
