Rising Together

In a world that often feels divided, the Democratic Women’s Club of Marco (DWCM) stands as a powerful testament to the transformative force of community and collective action. On January 14, the DWCM gathered for their first meeting of 2025, where the air was filled with hope, resilience, and a shared determination to create meaningful change. While some of the evening was spent reviewing past events and initiatives, most of the time was spent planning for future advocacy. And at the heart of the meeting was a reminder of what binds this group together: a commitment to uplifting their community.

At the center of this commitment was guest speaker Evelyn Rossetti-Ryan, EdD, the Executive Director of Our Daily Bread Food Pantry (ODBFP). With passion and grace, Evelyn shared the story of a mission that began in 2016 with a simple yet profound purpose: to offer food, encouragement, and hope. Now, with a new location on San Marco Road set to open this year, ODBFP serves as a lifeline for families, seniors, and children across Marco Island and southeastern Naples.

From weekly food distributions to mobile pantries and school programming, ODBFP demonstrates how a small but mighty team—just one employee, a nine-member board, and over 250 volunteers—can nourish not just bodies, but spirits. Evelyn’s call to action was clear: every hand and every dollar matters. With 91% of donations directly supporting their mission, she urged attendees to volunteer, donate, or simply spread the word about the pantry’s essential work.

This spirit of giving and action resonated deeply with DWCM members, who themselves embody the mantra that democracy is not a spectator sport. In just one evening, the club collected over 230 pounds of food for ODBFP and coordinated efforts to welcome newly registered Democrats in the area with letters and outreach. The meeting was not just a gathering; it was a reaffirmation of the power of purpose-driven action.

Amplifying Impact in 2025

As the DWCM looks ahead, their goals are both ambitious and deeply rooted in service. Community outreach remains a top priority, with initiatives like the new “Little Free Library” in Veteran’s Park. Curated with banned books, children’s literature, and Spanish-language titles, the library will serve as a beacon for inclusivity and learning. Members were encouraged to contribute books and time to this meaningful project.

Environmental advocacy also emerged as a critical focus. Judy Freiberg of the Collier County Environmental Caucus outlined opportunities for collaboration on pressing issues, including an upcoming roundtable discussion and partnerships with local and state organizations. These efforts reflect the DWCM’s dedication to protecting the natural beauty and resources that define Naples and Marco Island.

Celebrating Wins, Building Resilience

While the meeting was forward-focused, it also offered a moment to celebrate hard-won victories from 2024. The election of Deb Henry to the Marco Island City Council and Melissa Blazier as Collier County Supervisor of Elections were among the highlights. These successes, coupled with key outcomes on school board races, Amendment One and the referendum serve as reminders of what’s possible when people come together with a shared vision.

Yet, as Club President Karen Tessel-Blum noted, progress requires persistence. She encouraged members to channel any lingering frustrations into action, echoing the words of Collier County Democratic Chairwoman Jane Schlechtweg: “Change has never been easy, and it’s never come quickly. But it’s only when people refuse to give up that real progress happens.”

Join the Movement

DWCM is more than a political organization; it is a community of neighbors united by a belief in the power of hope, action, and resilience. Whether through volunteering, attending meetings, or simply starting conversations, there are countless ways to be part of this journey.

DWCM’s monthly meetings are open to members and their guests. Our next meeting is on Tuesday, February 11 at 5:00 PM at Mackle Park Community Center. The February guest speaker is Kara Kouloheras, Vice President of Philanthropy for Habitat for Humanity who will present on Habitat’s plans for the future as well as share the history and success of their programs and how you can get involved.

For more information about meetings, membership, or supporting our charitable efforts, go to dwcmarco.org or contact us at info@dwcmarco.org. Together, we can continue to make Marco Island a place where opportunity, equality, and justice thrive—one act of kindness, one vote, and one voice at a time.
