MIA Celebrates World Cultures

After years of celebrating, Festival of Nations at Marco Island Academy has grown to be a school-wide success. MIA hosted its annual feast on Friday, November 22nd.

Festival of Nations is an event special to MIA that has been taking place for years, each time growing bigger than the last. This year, the event was over two hours long, featuring singers, dancers, and lots of food. Students are encouraged to bring homemade food special to their cultures and dress up to represent their familial backgrounds.

More than just an assembly, Festival of Nations represents all of the cultures that make up MIA.

Lori Galiana, humanities teacher, first started the event in her classroom. “Festival of Nations began as an end-of-the-semester celebration in my AICE Global Perspectives classes about 12 years ago. We wanted to celebrate the backgrounds and cultures of us all and what makes us Americans in a big “Friendsgiving” potluck.”

The school’s event is made possible by the combination of everyone coming together to make it into a memorable afternoon. Galiana commented on the work that goes into putting Festival of Nations together. “The whole Humanities Department works together to organize a day of international foods and performances for over 300 people,” said Galiana. “Mr. Dayett helps us with music for performances, the art department has student’s complete artwork, Mr. Scalia helps promote FoN in journalism, and staff helps out on the day of the event. It’s a lot of work, but totally worth it because so many students say it is their favorite event of the year. Every year we stress about having enough food and the miracle of Thanksgiving always comes through and we kick off Thanksgiving Break on a happy, grateful note.”
