On the Friday following the Marco Island Shell Club’s Spring Expo and Shell Art Sale, the Marco Island Shell Club formally convenes its Annual Meeting and Celebration Luncheon, an occasion dedicated to honoring both the achievements of the recent season and the enduring spirit of fellowship that defines the organization. This distinguished gathering brings together members who faithfully participate in the Club’s weekly workshops, along with Honorary Members whose years of devoted service and leadership have significantly shaped the Club’s history and mission.
The meeting offers an opportunity for members of all tenures to gather in fellowship, reflect on the Club’s achievements, and reaffirm their shared commitment to shell artistry, education, and community engagement. Past and present board members, committee chairs, workshop participants, and volunteers contribute reflections that highlight the strong sense of community, mutual support, and continuity that define the Club.
Incorporated in February 1982, the Marco Island Shell Club has evolved from a small gathering of dedicated enthusiasts into a thriving organization of nearly one hundred members. Through the sustained commitment, generosity, and volunteer service of its membership, the Club has been able to extend its mission beyond artistic expression to meaningful educational support. In the current year, five scholarships were awarded to students pursuing higher education in Marine Sciences, with two additional scholarships granted through an endowment established at Florida Gulf Coast University. Active membership in the Club affords opportunities for creative engagement through weekly workshops held throughout the season, from January through March, during which members craft distinctive shell art using shells collected from local beaches.
Attendance at this year’s Annual Meeting included fourteen Honorary Members and fifty-two current, active members. During the meeting, President Becky Miller presented an overview of the Club’s activities and outlined plans for the forthcoming year. Treasurer Cindy Wesolowski delivered a report on the Club’s financial status, Scholarship Chairperson Jenny Carpentier provided an account of the scholarships awarded, and Secretary Kathy Hare read the minutes from the previous year’s Annual Meeting. In recognition of exemplary dedication and service, two current members were conferred Honorary Memberships. Judy Arnold and Jackie Lunch were formally honored for their many years of leadership and meaningful contributions to the Club.
The continued success and sustainability of the Marco Island Shell Club stand as a direct reflection of the steadfast dedication of its members. With gratitude for past accomplishments and optimism for the future, plans are already underway for the coming year’s weekly workshops and for the scheduling of two shell art sales. These events remain essential to funding the scholarship and grant programs that lie at the heart of the Club’s mission and legacy.
