For many Marco Island residents, buying a boat is the beginning of a dream. The freedom to explore the Ten Thousand Islands, spend an afternoon at Keewaydin, watch dolphins from the bow, or enjoy dinner at a waterfront restaurant is one of the reasons so many of us choose to live here.
Yet many boat owners never become as comfortable on the water as they hoped. Some are new to boating. Others learned from family or friends years ago and have never had formal instruction. Many would simply enjoy boating more if they had greater confidence—and a group of fellow boaters to share the experience with.
That's the opportunity being offered this fall by the Marco Island Sail & Power Squadron as it launches its 2026-2027 education season. And this year, the Squadron is making that opportunity easier to take advantage of: America's Boating Course will be offered FREE to everyone, while all core courses and seminars will be FREE to Squadron members. More than a schedule of classes, the program is designed to help local boaters become part of an active boating community while learning practical skills from experienced instructors who navigate Southwest Florida waters every day.
Of course, the benefits extend well beyond meeting fellow boaters. The Squadron's flagship America's Boating Course satisfies Florida's boating education requirement and qualifies successful students for the state-approved NASBLA Boating Safety Education Card. Formal boating education has consistently been associated with fewer accidents and better decision-making on the water, and many marine insurance companies offer discounts to graduates.
Under Florida law, anyone born on or after January 1, 1988, who operates a vessel powered by a motor of 10 horsepower or greater must successfully complete a NASBLA-approved boating safety course and carry proof of completion while operating the boat. The requirement applies not only to Florida residents, but also to many visitors operating boats in Florida waters. Florida does not issue a “boating license”; instead, successful students receive a Florida Boating Safety Education Identification Card, which is valid for life.
If you have children, grandchildren, or visiting family members who will be operating your boat, now is an excellent time to make sure they meet the state’s requirements—and gain the confidence that comes from quality boating education.
Three core courses anchor this year's curriculum. America's Boating Course, which will be offered FREE to everyone, begins in October, followed by Boat Handling in November and Marine Navigation in January. New this year, America's Boating Course and Boat Handling will also include on-the-water instruction, giving students the opportunity to practice selected skills under the guidance of experienced boaters.
Complementing the core curriculum is a series of specialized seminars covering subjects including Hurricane Preparedness, Partner in Command, CPR/First Aid, Situational Awareness, Anchoring, GPS, AIS, Weather Forecasting, Marine Batteries, Tides and Currents, Chart Use, and Knots and Line Handling. Whether you're a novice or a seasoned captain, there is something to learn.
For the first time in Squadron history, all core courses and seminars will be offered FREE to Squadron members. Even more significantly for the broader Marco Island boating community, America's Boating Course will be FREE to everyone - members and non-members alike. Non-members are also welcome to enroll in the Squadron's other courses and seminars for a modest fee. Boaters considering multiple classes may find that membership offers exceptional value - not only through free education but also through year-round cruises, rendezvous, social events, happy hours, and boating activities.
For the 2026-2027 education season:
Learning doesn't end when class is over. Many friendships begin in the classroom and continue on the water during Boat Around Marco cruises, trips to Panther Key and Keewaydin, Captain's Meetings, and other Squadron events. For many members, the education program is simply the gateway to becoming part of Marco Island's boating community.
Registration for the 2026-2027 education season opens soon. Complete course descriptions, schedules, and registration information are available at www.marcoboatingclub.org/boating-courses. Early registration is encouraged, as class sizes are limited. You can register for courses and seminars by calling or texting Jeff Williams at 504-220-6524.
