Marco Noontime Rotary Celebrates 60 Years of Service

The Flags for Heroes concept was discovered in 2020 when Alan and Linda Sandlin attended Rotary District President-Elect Training in Orlando. While exploring the Rotary Marketplace, Alan learned about the program from founder Steve Cropper. Since its creation, Flags for Heroes has expanded to 20 states and is now used by more than 250 Rotary and Lions Clubs, VFWs, American Legion posts, and churches.

The program honors heroes from all walks of life—including military members, first responders, healthcare workers, teachers, clergy, neighbors, and family members—by flying an American flag in their name. For a $50 sponsorship, each hero is recognized with a dedicated flag, aligning perfectly with Rotary’s motto, Service Above Self.

Introduced to the Marco Island Noontime Rotary Board by Linda Sandlin, the project was unanimously approved. Its outdoor format made it especially meaningful during the COVID pandemic, allowing the club to safely continue its humanitarian efforts.

Today, Flags for Heroes has grown into a premier community event. This year, 400 American flags will be displayed on seven-foot poles at the YMCA lot at San Marco and Sandhill Road from February 14–20, each with a personalized medallion honoring a hero.

The Grand Opening Ceremony will take place on President’s Day, February 16, at 5:00 PM, featuring local police and fire heroes, a VFW Honor Guard presentation, patriotic music, and closing performances of Amazing Grace and Taps. The event is open to the public; guests are encouraged to bring chairs and arrive early.

As part of its 60th anniversary celebration, the Rotary Club of Marco Island Noontime will also host its 16th Annual Spirit Awards and Diamond Anniversary Gala on Saturday, April 11, at the Island Country Club. The event is open to the community.
