Laura Ingalls Wilder once said, “Our hearts grow tender with childhood memories and love of kindred, and we are better throughout the year for having, in spirit, become a child again at Christmastime.” Those words rang true for the Marco Island Woman’s Club (MIWC) at their December luncheon recently held at Naples Lakes Country Club.
MIWC President Sue Purvis welcomed the gathering of MIWC members, spouses, and other friends who enjoyed a delectable holiday feast with all the trimmings. The voice of an angel, known to MIWC as our very own Shirley Thayer, led the Pledge of Allegiance and musical rendition of God Bless America.Wendy Nowlan delivered an inspirational holiday invocation that set the tone for peace and joy. Holiday centerpieces and ornament favors created by Lynn Nathanson and her daughter, Julie, graced the tables with elegance. The attendees enjoyedsome holiday fun with Christmas Movie Bingo, created by MIWC Vice President Tammy Barstow.Heartfelt holiday spirit arose from the joy of giving. The attendees collectively brought a Toyland of dolls, games, puzzles, toy trucks, stuffed animals…you name it, it was there! These fabulous toys will be given to local children in need of a hug this season. Barb Dasti and Alisha Pacheko of Christmas Island Style were on hand to be sure that the toys will make it to the North Pole on time for Santa’s ride on Christmas Eve.
We believe it is in giving that we receive. Some of our favorite gifts that we havereceived are our new members! Membership Chair Joyce Frame introduced new members Cindy Macquarrie, Anne Vanic,Mitzi Pummer, LeeAnn Conlon, and Karen Burlage. We gratefully welcome these ladies to our spirit of friendship and goodwill in our community.
Our joy of giving will continue throughout the year. MIWC gives back to our community in so many ways through our Charitable Foundation. Our members work diligently throughout the year to raise funds that will be presented as scholarships to students living on Marco Island and will also support local charitable organizations and causes. Our annual fashion show fundraiser, “An Affair to Remember,”will be held February 23, 2026, at Naples Lakes Country Club. This sold-outblockbuster event will be a showcase of style and glamour to rival the red carpet of the Oscars.Sponsorship opportunities are available. Remember: A gift to MIWC is a gift to the entire community.
Our January luncheon program, “Shelter Me: A Promise of Safety,” featuring Lauren McDermott of The Shelter for Abused Women & Children, will be held January 7, 2026, at Naples Lakes Country Club. MIWC Charitable Foundation is a long-time supporter of The Shelter.
As you can see, MIWC is more than just a club. We are a movement that gives back to our community. We do this while having fun!We are the ladies in the blue shirts you have seen lending a helping hand at various community events. We embrace friendships through special interest groups like a travel club, book clubs, a stitchers group, cards and games, a theater group, and more.Wouldn’t you like to be a part of this amazing organization?
