The Marco Island Sail and Power Squadron (MISPS), the local chapter of America’s Boating Club®, will hold its annual Change of Watch on January 14, marking the formal transition of leadership and celebrating another year of service to the Marco Island boating community. The Change of Watch is a members-only event and a longstanding maritime tradition that symbolizes continuity, volunteer leadership, and a renewed commitment to education, safety, and fellowship on the water.
At this year’s ceremony, Chris Ricci, outgoing Commander, will pass the gavel to Chris Frost, who will assume the role of Commander for the coming year. While the event itself is reserved for members, it represents the ongoing work and community spirit that MISPS brings to Marco Island year-round.
For more than four decades, MISPS has served local boaters through education, safety programs, and community outreach, all delivered by volunteers who share a passion for boating and lifelong learning. The Squadron offers a wide range of boating courses for all experience levels—from America’s Boating Course® for new boaters to advanced navigation, boat handling, weather, marine electronics, and engine maintenance.
MISPS also provides free vessel safety checks to area boaters, helping promote safer and more enjoyable experiences on local waterways. Beyond education, the Squadron places a strong emphasis on fellowship, with regular meetings, educational presentations, and social gatherings throughout the year, including informal Captain’s meetings during the summer months.
Membership in MISPS is open to anyone with an interest in boating—boat ownership is not required. Many members join to sharpen their skills and stay safe on the water, and remain for the friendships and shared experiences that develop along the way.
As the Squadron looks ahead under new leadership, it remains committed to its mission of promoting safe boating, continuing education, and strong community connections—by boaters, for boaters.
