More than 40 members of the Marco Island Sail and Power Squadron gathered for their monthly dinner meeting — and this one had a little bit of everything: important public safety insights, plenty of laughs, and a fantastic meal to top it all off.
This month’s gathering took place at The Burrow Restaurant on Bald Eagle Drive, setting the stage for an engaging and lively evening. Members were treated to a special presentation by Marco Island Police Chief Tracy Frazzano and Marine Patrol Sergeant Ryan Montgomery, who offered a behind-the-scenes look at public safety both on land and on the water.
Chief Frazzano led off with an informative — and eye-opening — discussion on local safety trends. While Marco Island remains a remarkably safe community, she noted that larceny continues to be the most common issue, often tied to something surprisingly simple: unlocked doors, cars, and garages.
Her point hit home with the audience — especially when one of the evening’s lighter moments unfolded.
When the Chief discussed local speed enforcement, Squadron member Geoff Fahringer stood up and shared his own experience of being stopped while riding his bike over the Collier Bridge — for exceeding the 12 mph speed limit. The room broke into laughter, and Geoff confirmed (to even more laughs) that he has been carefully observing the limit ever since. As the Chief noted, it was a perfect example of how education — sometimes delivered with a smile — works.
Chief Frazzano also encouraged everyone to stay informed through the City of Marco Island’s social media channels and the RED ALERT notification system, which provides real-time updates on emergencies, traffic issues, and severe weather.
Sergeant Montgomery then took the floor, shifting the conversation to the waterways — a topic especially close to the heart of Power Squadron members. He described how marine patrol officers are on the water seven days a week, focusing heavily on boater education, safety, and enforcement.
Members engaged in a lively Q&A session, particularly around no-wake zones and safe vessel operation, with Sgt. Montgomery explaining that stops often include full safety inspections — and even Coast Guard–approved vessel checks for those who request them. Squadron members were quick to note (with a smile) that the Power Squadron offers those same courtesy vessel safety checks right at your dock and completely free of charge — we didn’t realize we had a little competition on the water.
And then — as always — came the part everyone looks forward to.
Dinner.
The Burrow delivered in style, serving up steak and salmon dinners with all the fixings, followed by what many agreed was some of the best cheesecake they’ve ever had. Conversations continued, stories were shared, and the room carried that unmistakable buzz of a group that genuinely enjoys spending time together.
Beyond the food and fellowship, evenings like this reflect what the Marco Island Sail & Power Squadron is all about: education, community, and having a great time while doing both.
