Knights Golf for a Cause

As Father Tim Navin of San Marco Catholic Church and I sat and chatted with Joe Granda, one of the former Grand Knights of the Knights of Columbus, we came to realize it has been 51 years since the Knights began their annual charity golf tournament.

This event came about due to the hard work of the late Dick Shanahan, a former Grand Knight himself, and has carried on to benefit many charities across the island. Amongst those charities are the St. Vincent de Paul San Marco Conference, Our Daily Bread Food Pantry, the Knights of Columbus college scholarships, and several veterans’ programs.

Over one hundred golfers registered for the tournament held at the Island Country Club. They braved the heat and humidity on a beautiful Saturday afternoon after enjoying a wonderful luncheon spread. “We are so grateful for the Island Country Club’s hospitality, which makes the event a great success each year.

The committee members who made the tournament possible include Rich Tinger, John Caltabiano, John DeRosa, Steve Layng, Dennis Pidherny, John Barto, Ralph Peterman, Dick Gabrys, Joe Granda, and Ben Farnsworth. They are also sending out a special thank you to Tournament Sponsor Phelan Family Brands along with The Carvelli Restaurant Group, The Tonkinson Foundation, DeVoe Cadillac, Matt Basler, Jack and Eunice Drobnick, Condee Electric, as well as Hole Sponsors, all of which made the 51st annual event such a success.
