This holiday season, families across Florida are searching for gifts that bring joy, and electric bicycles are at the top of many lists. These devices offer fun, freedom, and independence for riders of all ages. As they become more common in our neighborhoods, it is important that families understand exactly what they are buying. An e-bike and an e-moto are not the same. Some of these machines can reach speeds similar to a small motorcycle, and many parents have shared that they did not realize the difference until after a purchase was made.
As a mother and as a state representative, I feel a deep responsibility to the people I serve. HB 243 comes from listening to parents, doctors, law enforcement officers, elected officials, and community members who want clarity, education, and safer roads. They want their rights respected, and they want their loved ones protected.
This bill focuses on education, enforcement, and better data. It helps families understand the device they are buying and what safe use looks like. It strengthens enforcement so expectations are clear and fair. It updates outdated laws and improves crash reporting so we can make informed decisions that reflect today’s technology. Most importantly, it protects public safety without taking away freedom or choice.
The bill will go through the committee process, which ensures transparency and thoughtful discussion.
I know that no policy can prevent every situation, but it is my responsibility to write laws that protect the rights of Floridians while also taking real steps to keep our communities safe. HB 243 reflects that commitment.
