Improving Beach Accessibility at the MICA Beach Club

Posted

The Marco Island Civic Association (MICA) Beach Club Disability Improvements ad hoc Committee met to discuss ways to improve accessibility and enhance the beach experience for members and guests with mobility challenges.

Committee members explored a variety of ideas aimed at making the Beach Club more welcoming, navigable, and inclusive for the disabled. Discussions included potential improvements to beach access, transportation assistance, signage, and accommodations for individuals with disabilities.

The Beach Club already offers several accessibility resources for members, including a disabled-accessible beach platform and two mobility beach wheelchairs available for member use. The committee discussed ways to better promote awareness of these existing amenities through enhanced signage and informational materials.

Beach wheelchairs are available at the MICA Beach Club Gate House. Please ask the gate attendant for information as you enter the property. The attendant will be more than happy to assist you.

Among the additional suggestions discussed were designating two chickee huts near the north access road for disabled use, extending an accessibility mat from the main boardwalk to the first two chickees, and expanding signage throughout the property to better inform members about available accommodations.

The committee also discussed creating informational handouts for individuals with disability placards, increasing parking availability, and promoting awareness through educational outreach.

Additional ideas included seasonal volunteer assistance programs to help transport wheelchairs and beach equipment, and transport mobility-impaired individuals to the beach during designated seasonal hours.

The committee also shared that AED equipment has now been delivered and installed at the gatehouse, with staff training currently underway to ensure preparedness and enhanced safety for members and guests.

While not all ideas discussed may ultimately be implemented, the meeting served as a productive brainstorming session focused on improving accessibility and quality of life for all members of the community.

MICA thanks committee participants, including Anita Sargese, Karen Hagman, Phyllis Mesko, Cindy Sheppelman, Teri Sommerfield, and Ruth McCann.
