From Marco Island to Mumbai

The gulf between Marco Island’s tranquil beaches and Mumbai’s overcrowded pediatric wards is measured not only in miles but in heartbeats. In 2023, a visit to India by Marco Island Rotarian Prem Advani catalyzed an urgent partnership between the Rotary Clubs of Marco Island and Deonar, India. Together, they formed the “Touching Little Hearts” initiative, transforming local philanthropy into a lifeline for children with congenital heart disease (CHD)in India.

CHD in the developing world is an invisible crisis. One in every 100 babies in India is born with a heart defect, yet fewer than 2% receive corrective treatment. For families living on roughly USD $750 a year, the surgery costs between $4,800–$19,000 US are insurmountable. The result: treatable structural defects become fatal as delays lead to heart failure and irreversible lung damage, pushing children from curable to palliative care.

Compounding the crisis is diagnostic neglect. Children with CHD are often dismissed as “weak” when symptoms—breathlessness during feeding, bluish lips or fingertips, and poor weight gain—point to surgical solutions. Early detection is vital; the program’s focus on screening arrests the ticking clock before the window for curative intervention closes.

The initiative is built on a Structured Partnership Model. A formal Memorandum of Understanding between Rotary District 3141 and Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital—a 750-bed tertiary center—guarantees that low-income patients receive the same standard of care as wealthier individuals. The Children’s Heart Centre, led by Dr. Suresh Rao, a pediatric cardiac surgeon with 35 years’ experience and over 13,000 surgeries, deploys advanced techniques to ensure charity care equals world-class care.

Rotary’s leverage is the program’s “secret sauce.” Negotiated pricing tiers convert modest donations into full surgical packages. Rotary handles identification through medical camps and community networks, aggregates funds from Marco Island donors, CSR partners, and Global Grants, and maintains transparent accountability for every surgery.

In 2024, the Rotary Club of Marco Noontime raised an initial $75,000 at its annual Spirit of Marco Island Awards Gala through a cash call, generously supported by attendees from our Marco Island community. These initial funds have supported two significant Rotary International Global Grants totaling $217,000, resulting in 133 young lives being saved to date! Rotarian Leaders such as Prem Advani and Durrell Buzzini of the Marco Island Rotary Club Noontime, along with Rotarians from the India Rotary Club, Jaisal Jetsey and Sangeeta Shahani, ensure that local generosity becomes a lifesaving impact.

The program’s return on investment extends beyond operating rooms. Each saved child prevents family economic collapse, restores caregivers to work, and returns children to school and play. Touching Little Hearts reframes CHD not as an inevitable tragedy but as a solvable logistics and funding problem—proof that geography and income need not determine a child’s chance to live, thrive, and reclaim childhood.

The Marco Island Rotary Club Noontime will be celebrating its 60th Anniversary of Community and International Service at its 2026 Spirit Award Diamond Anniversary Gala on April 11th at the Island Country Club. The Gala will be recognizing the following three Honorees: Linda Cassens, Dave Rice and Val Simon.
