Changes at Marco Island Charter Middle School

Posted

Marco Island Charter Middle School (MICMS)is currently navigating more than one administrative change as the ’25-’26 schoolyear comes to a close. With the excitingand happy news of receiving their charter contract renewal for another 15 yearsfrom the Collier County Public School Board comes this good deal of change.

The A+School, which is currently rated #102 out of Florida’s Middle Schools, has been a cornerstone of the Marco Island community for nearly 30 years. Principal Margo Heidenreich is proud of the accomplishments of the students and the faculty that guided them to these accolades.“In addition to our charter being renewed, our test scores improved upon last year's,” said Heidenreich."Our enrollment was trending upwards. It was all good things happening…”

On Wednesday, May 27, a schoolboard meeting took place with an unorthodox attendance of roughly 80 parents. The board proceeded to make a motion that was not on the meeting agenda and chose to terminate MICMS Principal Margo Heidenreich.

As the status of her position was not on the agenda, Principal Heidenreich did feel blindsided by the motion, but stands beside the board in saying that the decision to hire and fire is within their purview. “The board is going in a different direction with administration,” she said.

“All the good things that have happened,” she said, referencing the charter renewal, the upward test scores, and the increased enrollment, “have not changed. It has been really positive.”

She attributes the decision toa result of social media backlash in the last month, with two parents reporting to have issues. Principal Heidenreich states that these two specific issues were not addressed with her prior to the evening of the school board meeting.

“Myself, Board Member Allyson Richards, and Board President Larry Heineman resigned immediately because we did not agree with the decision to terminate Principal Heidenreich,” said former school board president, Tarik Ayasun, who served the school for 18 years and was asked to return in November of 2025.

Heidenreich, who will remain on the books through the end of June, is not aware of who the board is looking atfor her replacement. “I came into a tumultuous turnover three years ago; I would like to make it easier for the next person.” Heidenreich stated that she has been and will continue to work hard to ensure as smooth a transition as possible for her replacement.

The board has also decided not to renew the contracts of six teachers within the MICMS faculty, in addition to an office manager and part-time teacher, the Dean of Discipline, the school nurse, and a long-term sub.
“I feel terrible for these people who were not given contracts. They are good people. A lot of them have been here longer than I have and deserve a clap out, if you will, or something like, ‘Thank you for your service. Thank you for all you've done.’ Principal Heidenreich touched on the board’s choices to not renew contracts quietly during the last week of school. “They have touched thousands of lives on this island, and I think we can do better than that. They deserve better than that.”

The minutes from the May 27school board meeting have not yet been made available, but the MICMS School Board has submitted a Press Release and joint statement.
