City of Marco Island Growth Management Department, Marco Island Chamber of Commerce, and the Collier County Building Industry Association hosted a Builders Roundtable on May 13 at City Hall.
They brought together contractors, builders, developers, business owners, residents, and city leaders for a packed discussion focused on the construction-related matters. City of Marco Island had hosted the Builders Roundtable previously and has since implemented a number of changes, particularly in the processing of permits.
Dr. Casey Lucius, now City Manager, announced to the audience how grateful she was to see a full house to give feedback on the improvements. Dan Smith, Director of Community Affairs, guided the audience through a presentation highlighting the improvements made since last year’s roundtable. Smith then opened the floor to other City department heads present to answer questions from local contractors. The entire Marco panel echoed a phrase first used by Fire Rescue Chief Chris Byrne, “We want to learn from you!”
The Builders Round Table will be an annual event to give our local contractors, builders, developers, and businesses the chance to take the microphone and keep an open dialogue with the city. What began as a response to communication breakdowns and long permit wait times has now evolved into an annual opportunity to “clear the air,” tackle ongoing concerns, and keep everyone — from contractors to city officials — on the same page. The presentation, coordinated by Smith, concluded with a list of city improvements, including enhanced web resources, dedicated information pages, photo-based inspection guides, and improved website accessibility. Smith added that the website is still being updated to improve navigation and overall user experience. A summary mentioned the city's improvements: clear instructions and expectations for inspections, as well as strengthened dialogue about what contractors, local businesses, or builders will face before coming to City Hall for permits.
Smith highlighted that team development was the main topic of the last Roundtable meeting. He stated improvements in this category were starting a permit clerk tier program for structured skill development. The major improvements under this category were growth development opportunities, such as team skill enhancements, which were provided through proper training. While gathering a thorough analysis of this meeting, the City's perspective on every issue was thoroughly thought out. Improvements during hurricane prep safety for contractors and developers and also contractors with ‘out of the blue’ permitting delays.
The theme for this event was “consistency on service.” Since the last gathering, the City and the Chamber have adapted and are currently learning about newer technologies to improve their systems even further. Not only is this helping the contractor and local businesses, but homeowners will also soon be getting automated emails to keep them updated on their permitting status, everyone is on the same page, and miscommunication during permitting will diminish. Face-to-face staff support will be available for building services to enhance this improvement even more. Ultimately, a transparent workplace culture ensures that city staff can focus entirely on what matters most: effectively serving the residents of Marco Island.
City Hall also posted updates and an extended summary on their system improvements, as well as narrowing down the May 13 Builders Round Table open floor discussion.
