Imagine a mash-up of beloved Christmas stories and traditions crafted with a focus on the fun and humor of the tongue-in-cheek and slapstick varieties. Well, that’s exactly what’s being offered with aplomb by the Arts Center Theatre production of “Every Christmas Story Ever Told (And Then Some!)”
The 90-minute-long excursion into family-friendly holiday hilarity runs until December 22 at the Marco Town Center playhouse.
A group of actors preparing to perform Charles Dickens “A Christmas Carol” provides the plot’s jumping off point. Having performed the holiday classic innumerable times, it’s not a prospect they find appealing. So, they opt for a fresh approach blending beloved yuletide tales with Christmas traditions from around the globe, seasonal icons from antiquity, today’s pop culture, and every carol ever sung.
The result is a fast-paced, surprise-filled romp spanning Scrooge, “It’s a Wonderful Life” protagonist George Bailey, the Grinch and Frosty the Snowman, and “A Charlie Brown Christmas.” Hanukkah and Kwanza, and holiday traditions from Germany, Spain, Sweden and other European cultures are also woven into the plot.
In this production, the fourth wall is but a memory. Audience participation occasionally plays an integral role in the proceedings. So does music, which ranges from snippets of historically traditional Christmas songs to “You’re a Mean One Mr. Grinch.”
The production is directed by Marlene Strollo and the cast is comprised of Melissa Hennig, Kip Jones, Skyler Moore, Christopher Noonan, Ashley Kosten, and Sarah Gamblin.
