Hunger is all too often thought of as a need for nutritional nourishment. Food, however, is not the only nourishment needed to keep one healthy, especially as we grow older. The hunger for social interaction can be as important to older adults as the food we eat.
Realizing the need to nurture and feed the mind as well as the body, Our Daily Bread Food Pantry has joined forces with Al’s Pals and the YMCA in organizing and running the highly successful event called Lunch With Friends Over 60. Through the generosity of the Marco Lutheran Church, the monthly event is held on the third Wednesday of each month and has great success.
On April 19th, the meal was provided by the owners of the Sandbar Restaurant. Each month the meal for approximately 100 participants is provided by philanthropically minded island restaurants, while others may donate salads and desserts, which of course, are very popular with the attendees.
The speakers at the luncheon were City Manager Michael McNees and Assistant City Manager Casey Lucius. They spoke on a wide range of topics and answered questions ranging from how to deal with hurricanes to the opening of the new firehouse later this month.
All are welcome to attend the Lunch With Friends Over 60, held on the third Wednesday of each month at Marco Lutheran Church. Doors open at 11:00 AM, and there is no charge to join those in attendance for monthly speakers and luncheon.
This event allows seniors across the island to spend time together, meet with friends, and share information about other wonderful gatherings and activities they might find interesting. The Coastal Breezes News also publishes a calendar of events in each edition that features a wide variety of activities and events for readers. Grab a paper around town or read it on your computer, laptop or tablet at www.coastalbreezenews.com. An app is also available through the Apple Store and Google Play.
