In 1987, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that Rotary Clubs could not deny membership to women based on gender. This came at a time when women were making strides in the workplace, being recognized and promoted for leadership capabilities and professional accomplishments. Over the past 30 years, Rotary International has welcomed a significant number of professional women looking to get involved in community service projects, fundraising and following the Rotary motto of “Service Above Self,” yet female members still account for less than 25% of global Rotary membership.
Rotary International District 6960 of Southwest Florida is hosting a webinar series, “Infinite Possibilities: Women in Rotary,” designed to inspire and engage attendees through the powerful stories told by renowned female speakers. The four-part series will include one-hour motivational talks that will appeal to men and women and offers the opportunity to learn more about the history of Rotary, its accomplishments, and its impact on people and communities around the world.
The series kicks off at 1 PM, July 31st with “The Edge of Tomorrow” presentation given by a prominent Rotarian, Sylvia Whitlock, who was the first woman Rotary Club President. Elected by members of the Rotary Club of Duarte, California in 1987, she led the beginning of a shift for more women leaders in Rotary Clubs and in positions of higher rank up to the international level. Throughout her decades-long membership in Rotary, Whitlock has served Rotary in various capacities and speaks around the world about how her relationship with Rotary helped shape her life.
“The Infinite Possibilities series provides an opportunity to showcase the much-needed diversity of membership growth in Rotary,” comments Cyndi Doragh, Infinite Possibilities Committee Chair. “Women enhance the value proposition to rotary.”
The “Women in Rotary” series continues the last Friday of each month through October. Other speakers include Rotarian Jenny Stotts and former Rotary International Vice President Dean Rohrs.
A follow-up series, “Infinite Possibilities, Series 2: Diversity, Equity and Inclusion,” will be offered at 1 PM the last Friday of each month from January through April 2021.
