Writers Group challenge

Submitted

Marco Island Writers held their first meeting at Marco Island Center for the Arts on Wednesday, September 12th. MIW is thrilled to be recognized as an important part of the arts program of Marco Island.

We had a great turn-out for a sleepy September, 14 regular members along with five new members and guests were entertained by author/performer/musician Steve Ortiz. Steve has a unique way of sharing Welcome to the Library of My Life through song, humor and rhyme. His show business family’s story took us through poverty, suspense and murder. His first novel, Little Red Feather will be available for sale soon, and there are two additional books in the works including the written version of his performance.

For the second hour, member Nick Kalvin, M.D., shared his poetry with thought-provoking and edgy subject matter. During our Read & Recommend session, members/writers have an opportunity to share their Work In Progress (WIP) and receive positive, constructive feedback from the group.

The next meeting of the Marco Island Writers will be October 10, 2012. Shelley Maguire, author of Dancing in the Storm will be our guest speaker the first hour. A fun writing challenge of Flash Fiction will follow, encouraging everyone to bring their creative side out to play. Meetings are open to the public and first time attendees are always free. Returning members may pay $10 at the door or purchase a one year membership for $40. A 50/50 raffle is held each meeting with half the proceeds going to one lucky winner, but all tickets qualify for the Mega Drawing in August, 2013, to send one winner to the Florida Writer’s Conference in Orlando in October, 2013.
