WORLD AIDS DAY

Planned Parenthood of Collier County knows that knowledge saves lives, and Monday, Dec. 1 – World AIDS Day – is the perfect time to act on that notion. Free and confidential rapid HIV testing will be available that day at its Naples and Immokalee locations. No appointment is necessary. Testing hours are noon to 3:30 p.m.

All it takes is a simple finger prick, and results are available in as little as 20 minutes. To make the wait easier – even beautiful – those who get tested that afternoon can pass the time by receiving a free MAC makeup application.

In the United States, more than 1.1 million people are living with HIV, and almost 1 in 6 (15.8 percent) don’t know it. And that means they’re not getting the benefit of treatment that can extend their lives – and they also risk unknowingly passing the virus on to others. Testing on World AIDS Day can change that.

In this country, 1 in 4 new HIV infections occurs among adolescents and youth ages 13 to 24. So Planned Parenthood of Collier County also urges mothers, fathers, grandparents and other concerned adults to not only consider being tested themselves but also to encourage the young people in their lives to take this important step. Counselors will be on hand at both locations if needed when the results are delivered.

In 2012, Planned Parenthood provided 700,000 HIV tests. Nationally, the nonprofit provides the most testing services of any agency.

That’s in line with Planned Parenthood’s current mission. Called “The World We Want,” it envisions a world with zero new HIV infections, zero AIDS-related deaths and zero discrimination against those who are HIV-positive or living with AIDS. That’s all possible with your help.

One in five women has turned to Planned Parenthood at some point in her life for affordable, high-quality health care and nonjudgmental, confidential information and advice. Planned Parenthood of Collier County works every day to provide high-quality preventive health care, including well-woman exams, breast and cervical cancer screenings, and HIV and STD testing and treatment.

Planned Parenthood of Collier County is an affiliate of Planned Parenthood Federation of America, the nation’s largest and longest running family planning organization. More than 17,000 women, men and teens visit its health centers in Naples and Immokalee each year and rely on the comprehensive and affordable services to make responsible and informed decisions about sexual and reproductive health.

PPCC health centers are located at 1425 Creech Road in Naples and at 419 N. First St. in Immokalee. For more information, call 239-262-0301 or visit www.plannedparenthood.org/collier-county.
