The Marco Island Woman’s Club is both a civic-minded organization and an active social network with a long, proud history of serving the community. It is well known for generous contributions, ranging from providing college scholarships for deserving Marco Island high school students to restoring the Marco Island Cemetery and maintaining the garden therein. The Club has found another way to give to the communitythrough their special interest group, the Stitch Makers. Stitch Makers has approximately 30 Woman’s Club members who either crochet or knit blankets and hats for donations to various organizations.
At the Club’s April luncheon meeting, Anne Marchetti, founder of the group that began in May of last year, presented Karlie Colwell, Child Life Specialist of Golisano Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida, with the most recent donation. To date, a total of 94 handmade blankets have been donated. Stitch Makers is also planning to donate 13 more blankets and 26 hats to Golisano’s upcoming “Help Me Grow Community Baby Shower,” an educational outreach event to support new mothers of the migrant community.
Earlier, Marco Island Woman’s Club members, Tanya LaButte and Caitlin Robinson donated 50 Bedside Healers for the children at Golisano. These stuffed animals, with Velcro straps that easily attach to just about everything, were stylishly dressed in custom MIWC shirts designed and donated by Caitlin.
Marco Island Woman’s Club’s next meeting is Wednesday, May 3 at the Marco Island Yacht Club. Social time begins at 11:30 AM, followed by lunch at noon.
