On February 18, Debbie Rago, Marco Island Woman’s Club President, presented a check for $2,000 to Michele Wheeler, Principal of the Marco Island Charter Middle School, in support of the school’s “Feed the Children” initiative. The funds were donated by Woman’s Club members who are participating in the Club’s monthly “Lunch Money” campaign. The campaign was instituted this past fall as a way for the Club to raise funds to benefit local non-profit organizations during Covid-19. The Club has a long history of supporting local initiatives that focus on children and their education.
Principal Wheeler stated that “the need for food assistance at the school is a continual concern that has only been exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. The Feed the Children initiative allows the school to offer free or reduced-price lunches to qualifying students, 180 days a year”.
The Middle School does not receive funding for this program, nor is it required to provide student lunches. However, it is a priority for the school to do so since almost half of the students’ families are currently facing financial difficulties, and the students need nutrients to grow, develop, and focus on learning.
MICMS was established in 1998 so that local middle school aged students could stay on Marco Island. It is a public, tuition-free charter school, designated by the Florida Department of Education as a “High Performing Charter School” and a “School of Excellence.”
