The Annual Marco Island Yacht Club Winter Sailing Regatta will be held off of Marco Island on Saturday and Sunday, February 9th and 10th. Sailboats, along with their skippers and crew from many points around southwest Florida, will converge on Marco Island to compete for awards.

Races will be held directly off the Marco Island beach. Racing will start at 10 A.M. both days and will conclude by 3:30 P.M. A series of courses will be established by the race committee depending on each day’s wind and sea conditions. Race courses will be identified by red/orange inflated buoys accompanied by “mark boats.” The series of races will start on a start line between the “committee boat” and a yellow racing buoy. Boats will be divided into competitive classes based on type, size, sail configuration etc.

This regatta will be the first to offer a “greenhorn” racing class for sailors interested in racing for the first time. A short “greenhorn training session” will be offered Friday evening, February 8th, followed by the opportunity to sail the race course on Saturday as a “greenhorn” fleet. Race co-chair, Lois Dixon, stated that having the regatta right off the Marco beach and having the “greenhorn” fleet, are both designed to stimulate interest in sailing among Island residents and to encourage them to support and participate in classes offered by the Marco Island Community Sailing Center. The Sailing Center is located adjacent to the Yacht Club’s parking lot, to the lower right as one crosses the Jolley Bridge coming on to Marco Island.

Races will be within view from the Marco beach. The various boats and sail colors will present great opportunity for good picture-taking. Concluding the weekend will be an awards dinner Sunday evening at Porky’s Last Stand. Contacts: Lois Dixon 642-4993 or Chuck Downton 394-4323
