Win for Southwest Florida’s Land, Water, Wildlife and Future

The Board of Collier County Commissioners voted unanimously to legally challenge the consent agreement between the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) and the Dan A. Hughes Company. This action is related to the illegal and fracking-like oil extraction techniques the Hughes Company recently performed at their Hogan Island drill site.

Following the Collier County Commission’s unanimous vote on April 22 to request DEP revoke oil drilling permit provided to the Dan A. Hugh’s company for a well near Hogan Island, the Conservancy of Southwest Florida retained legal counsel and a technical expert to begin gathering information in an effort to support the County.

The acid and other unknown toxic substances illegally used by the Hughes Company is so close to an already existing and improperly plugged well that the potential of contamination to our drinking water supply increases dramatically.
