As this column runs throughout the year, I often find myself writing for an audience of full-time residents. However, we are blessed with a seasonal influx of visitors from around the globe. As a community, we need to care for our part-time residents and guests just as they take care of us by adding immeasurable value to our local economy.

Though no one wants their time in paradise being affected by a healthcare concern, it can happen. Just ask anyone who has ever sought medical care outside of their hometown, and they will likely share the physical and emotional strain that results from the search for qualified, trustworthy care in an unfamiliar place.

So, I ask you, the full-time resident and the visitor who happens to pick up Coastal Breeze News this week, if you are on Marco Island or in the surrounding area and you need immediate medical care: Who you gonna call?

Lucky for you, Physicians Regional-Marco Island is right around the corner. You can call 239-394-1670 to check availability and wait times or you can just come in.

If you ask around, some locals will share that Physicians Regional-Marco Island is a “Walk-In Clinic,” while others will refer to it as “Doctor’s Office.” In fact, both statements are true.

Open to patients since February 11, 2013, Physicians Regional-Marco Island is a 9,000 square-foot facility located at The Shops of Marco at the corner of Barfield and San Marco Road.

With physicians and registered clinicians on site, the Walk-In Clinic is open six days a week, and is intended to address non-life-threatening situations. Essentially, Physicians Regional-Marco Island offers patients easy, same-day access to a primary-care setting.

If you are a seasonal resident with an ongoing need for specialized medical care such as pulmonary and cardiology, you benefit from the appointment-based “Doctor’s Office” side of our facility. Plus, as everyone needs a primary care physician, we offer access to local medical professionals who can work in collaboration with your PCP back home.

However, let’s circle back to those who are sick with “no place to go.” As the concept of being “neighborly” is not limited to your fellow full-time residents, are you willing to keep your eyes open and offer advice to those you encounter requiring medical attention—and direct them accordingly?

Furthermore, for those of you in the hospitality industry or who personally rent property to seasonal guests, have you proactively provided information in your unit(s) regarding local healthcare resources? If not, please consider doing so: your guests may thank you.

Though Physicians Regional-Marco Island has more equipment and resources available than a typical doctor’s office, the clinic should not be used as an “Emergency Room.” Always dial 9-1-1 when experiencing a true emergency such as crushing chest pain, slurred speech, sudden vision loss, rapid onset weakness, and/or significant difficulty breathing.

Physicians Regional-Marco Island most often sees individuals with upper-respiratory or ear infections, urinary-tract infections, falls with broken bones, rashes, lacerations, nausea and abdominal or back pain—all of which can occur while one is “on vacation.”

Our state-of-the-art facility also offers physical therapy, rehab, lab and x-ray services with the results provided to the local or out-of-state physician of your choice.

Plus, as Physicians Regional-Marco Island is part of Physicians Regional Healthcare System—which includes Physicians Regional Medical Group and our two convenient hospital locations: one just north of Marco on Collier Boulevard and another on Pine Ridge Road—all visitors to the clinic ultimately have access to a host of board-certified physicians covering several medical specialties. This is especially important should your medical condition require additional specialized care.

Yes, it takes a village—or in this case, an island—to care for those who inhabit our surroundings. Though Physicians Regional Healthcare System has the medical experience necessary to treat a large number of ailments, your eyes, ears and actions have the power to also ensure a “healthy” Marco Island experience.

Caring for others should be everyone’s full-time job.

Physicians Regional-Marco Island is open Monday through Friday from 8 AM to 6 PM and Saturday from 8 AM to 12 noon. Most insurances are accepted. For more information on Physicians Regional-Marco Island, please call 239-394-1670.
