Presented by Mac Rivenbark of Mac’s Orchids of Ft. Lauderdale
Learn about growing great orchids! Orchid lovers are invited (no charge) to the Gulf Coast Alliance’s “Third Thursday Orchid Event” on July 17, 2014 at the Vanderbilt Presbyterian Church at 1225 Piper Blvd., Naples, FL 34110 from 6:30–8:30 pm. (Look for the tall steeples across from Sam’s Club on Immokalee Road.)
Mac Rivenbark of Mac’s Orchids in Fort Lauderdale will talk about his passion for Asian species, and how those orchids thrive here in Florida. His presentation will include a travel log, showing the areas where the orchids originate. He will also bring many of these orchids for sale.
Mac’s passion grew from many fascinating trips to the Philippines, where he was inspired to grow and collect different varieties of Asian species. Today, he has over 300 different Asian species that thrive here in Florida. His goal is to propagate these and to help educate and inform others about the ease of growing these beautiful flowers, many of which are now garnering American Orchid Society awards.
Another highlight of the July 17 event will be the Monthly Exhibition Judging, where Alliance members participate as exhibitors as well as judges, winning accolades for beautifully grown plants. A raffle benefiting the Alliance’s educational programs will be held for members and guests, with participants having a chance to win an exquisitely grown orchid. Plants will also be available for purchase, giving attendees an opportunity to add to their collections.
The 501(c)(3) non-profit Gulf Coast Orchid Alliance was formed in 2012 to promote interest in orchids, focusing on orchid education, community outreach and orchid conservation; and brings people together in an enjoyable, inclusive atmosphere.
