What Yoga Is Not

Body, Mind And Spirit

Yoga is not something to be afraid of. It is something to be embraced. It is not about twisting your body into a pretzel. It is about gradually gaining movement and flexibility. It is not about acrobatics or gymnastics. It is about being in the room and breathing. Most of all it is about BREATHING (something we have been doing since we left the womb). It is not about anyone in the room, but you. It is not about being perfect, and it is not about competition. It is about small per-sonal gains over time — set by you. It is not about being flexible, but gaining flexibility. Yoga is about connecting with your divine source, your authentic self. God, manifested in your body, your breath and your movement. There aren’t many opportunities in our daily lives that enable us to even contemplate or begin to find this connection in our very own souls.

Yoga has been around for thousands of years and the asana (pose) is just one small part of leading a “yogic” life. These physical positions were created to open the body of any blockages, tension and “distraction”, thus enabling it to be free to engage in the act of sitting for long periods in meditation. There are eight limbs of yoga. Non-harming, not stealing and truth in speech are just a few in the FIRST “limb” alone!

Stopping, quieting the mind, peeking within, taking the time for the self. The self that is here in this moment, and honoring that, just by simply breathing. If never practiced before, it is hard to imagine, but once you experience the freedom only yoga can bring, you will not imagine life without it.

In the spirit of the new year and new beginnings, let us think about taking the steps to take care of our health in the body and the mind and the spirit. There are many classes offered — Yoga, Booty barre, Drumming,TRX and many more — in the new space operated by Healthy Body/Marco Fitness. Google it up, and be-gin the journey to an improved you in 2014. Open and explore the wonderful world of fitness.

Find the peace, and open your life — with yoga.
