Welcome back to the nest celebration

By Linda J. Turner

It is officially nesting season and the bald eagles are once again busy rebuilding their nest in the center of the Marco Eagle Sanctuary on Tigertail Court.

Less than fifty years ago, there were many bald eagle nests on Marco Island. Today, there are only two remaining active nests on the island, one being at the Marco Eagle Sanctuary. The sanctuary is unique as it provides the public an opportunity to observe and photograph the eagles and their eaglets at a relatively close distance.

It is too soon to estimate when this season’s eaglets will arrive. Last season, two eaglets hatched in mid January, and the season before, two eaglets hatched in mid December. What is for certain is there will soon be an increasing number of local and out of state visitors at the Marco Eagle Sanctuary observing with binoculars, cameras and telescopic lens.

To celebrate the beginning of the 2012-13 nesting season, the Marco Eagle Sanctuary Foundation (MESF) will host a fundraising event on Thursday, November 8th, from 4 to 7 PM at the Snook Inn. The cost is $25 per person for food, ice tea or soda, live entertainment, door prizes and a 50- 50 raffle. Tickets may be purchased by check to MESF, P.O Box 983, Marco Island, FL, 34146 by November 6th or by credit card (secured site) on www. marcoeaglesanctuaryfoundation.org. Tickets will be available at will call the evening of the event. For additional information call 239 394-9285. All proceeds benefit the Marco Eagle Sanctuary Foundation, a 100% volunteer organization.
