A31-CBN-5-1-REPLACE-PLEASE-3VITAS Healthcare and BMO Harris Bank partnered to bring Alzheimer education to the residents of Marco Island on April 22nd.

Guest speaker for the event was Dr. Daniel Kaplan DO, MD. With 35 years of experience, Dr. Daniel Kaplan is board certified in family and geriatric medicine and associate medical director of VITAS Healthcare in Collier County.

Attendees received in-depth information about Alzheimer’s disease, from early symptoms through long term care possibilities. Alzheimer’s is a devastating disease that not only affects those diagnosed, but everyone around them. Over five million people in The United States are afflicted with Alzheimer’s and that is projected to rise dramatically as the baby boomer generation gets older.

While there is no cure for Alzheimer’s, education is critical. It can help people to recognize early symptoms and better prepare loved to understand the process of caring

for those affected. Events like this one held at BMO Harris bank, are a great way to receive some much needed education through an informal and social manner.

Attendees were greeted by representatives from the bank and VITAS. Wine and iced tea were offered and people had a chance to socialize before sitting down to Dr. Kaplan’s presentation. Following the lecture, food was served catered by Kitchen 845 out of Naples.

We were very pleased with the success of our partnership and the Alzheimer’s presentation,” said Cindy McCue, volunteer services manager at VITAS. “Our plan is to begin again in the fall and continue through the spring with a series of presentations by our doctors. It is a wonderful opportunity for us to share information with the Marco Island community on diseases that affect them or their loved ones. It also gives the attendees the chance to speak to our

doctors and ask them questions regarding the diseases.”

Rachel Schenk, Assistant Vice President and Branch Manager at BMO Harris said: “Cindy (McCue) approached me and asked if we would be interested in partnering with VITAS for this event. BMO Harris is the presenting sponsor for the Imagination Gala, through the American Cancer Society, and we want to be a part of the community. After meeting with Cindy and understanding VITAS values and vision I could not say no to having the event at our branch.”
