Unfolding a New Life

ASK THE LIFE COACH

Dear Coach,

I’m a newly retired professional man who recently moved to Marco Island with my wife. I love living here but I’m finding that if you don’t fish or golf there aren’t many ways to stay busy and meet other men. Any suggestions?

Signed,
Drifting

Dear Drifting,

Congratulations on your retirement and welcome to the island. I’m wondering if you had any outside interests, hobbies, or volunteer experiences before you retired. Think back to when you were a kid or young adult. What did you enjoy doing? Building model airplanes, reading, sports? Was there anything you dreamed of doing when you were working those long days? Perhaps you always wanted to try your hand at writing, playing pickle ball, or mentoring a child.

Here’s a coaching request for you. This week try one new thing. For instance: Visit the Marco Island Men’s Club, attend the Marco Island Writers group, take a painting class, snorkel, visit a men’s softball game, cook a new recipe. Or, check out the many volunteer opportunities like tutoring at Tommy Barfield Elementary School, participating in a beach clean-up, working at the Bargain Basket Thrift Shop. Soon, your time on the island will be full and rich. Let me know how your new life unfolds.
