On October 6, 2015, the Lely High School Lady Trojans celebrated volleyball with their annual Think Pink games. Always a fun event, supported by students who come out in force with pink gear including hats, t-shirts, face paint and signs!
Proceeds from the evening went to Bosom Buddies, in memory of Mrs. Beth Johnson. It was a clean sweep for the Gulf Coast High School team, which also defined the team as the Collier County Athletic Conference Champions. Lely lost in three games, 21, 17 and 11.
Coach Haire said, “We mentally and physicallyprepared ourselves for this game. Although we fell short, I am extremely proud of the strides this team has taken this season. We begin this season with a strong team motto, ‘Turn a setback into a comeback,’ which means something different to each player, but with the same concept. So I defer back to this motto. Even though we did not leave that gym with a win, we were still able to walk away learning something new, that will only make us stronger as we prepare for post season.”
According to Coach Haire, “Also in the beginningof the season, when we selected this game as our ‘Think Pink’ event, I thought back to last season, when our Lely volleyball team and our Lely family was affected by the loss of one of their own, to cancer. At that moment I knew it was only right to dedicate this event in her honor. I personally did not know Mrs. Johnson, but I heard nothing but positive remarks about her; the amazing teacher, mother, wife and friend that she was to so many people. I am so happy that the Johnson family was able to attend this event, as their family has weighed heavy our hearts.”
