One of Marco Island’s favorite gathering spots will change hands on April 1 when Dan Collardey, Tim McCoy and Jim Boylan turn over the reins of The SpeakEasy of Marco Island to its new owners.

Under their ownership, the well liked eatery has become a favorite of both islanders and visitors, due to its friendly atmosphere and popular menu. The outgoing nature of the owners and their community-minded spirit has made them a trendy place for locals to gather and bring their out-of-town visitors.

“The SpeakEasy was such a wonderful group of people to work with when it came to helping local groups raise money for special projects,” said Sandi Sims. A local realtor, Sims had organized a number of fundraisers for charity at the popular spot.

Wanda Day Burson, another active local volunteer, has attended and organized a number of events for charities and nonprofit organizations at The SpeakEasy. She echoed Sims’ comments. “We couldn’t have asked for a better community partner in all our endeavors,” said Burson.

According to Collardey, nothing should change with the hand-off of ownership. “This is a great couple that are taking over the reins. They are community minded people who are residents of the island and have been coming here since we opened. It is also important to know that they do have knowledge of the food service industry,” said Collardy.

Prior to the opening of The Speak- Easy, another popular restaurant was in that location going back several decades; The Captain’s Table had occupied a similar space on the ground level at the Chamber Plaza, and one of their most popular offerings was a Friday night lobster special. The SpeakEasy has a similar offering, but on Wednesday evenings, which brings back memories for old-timers on Marco.

Although they’ll be selling the business, no real estate will be changing hands according to Collardey.

Both Collardey and McCoy agreed that they will miss the day-to-day interaction with customers, listening to their stories and coming to know them like a family. “We’ve been very fortunate to have made so many wonderful friends and earning their trust,” said McCoy.

“I think we’ve built something here that I believe both the island and my partners can be proud of. Our vision for it has been realized and all three of us are very proud of the accomplishments, thanks to the hard work of this wonderful team,” said Collardy, as he looked over the outside deck and seating, filled with hungry lunch patrons.

Located within the Chamber of Commerce Plaza at 1106 ½ North Collier Boulevard, The SpeakEasy is open for lunch and dinner seven days a week and is also accessible by boat.
