Comedian Carlos Mencia, Host of Comedy Central’s “Mind of Mencia” and such movies and guest TV roles such as In Living Colour, Moesha, The Proud Family, The Shield, Farce of the penguins, The Heartbreak Kid, MADtv and Our Family Wedding will be making a one night, one show appearance , Monday , May 2 at 7:00 p.m. at Capt. Brien’s “Off the Hook” Comedy Club, 599 South Collier Blvd., here on Marco Island.

Mencia was born in San Pedro, Honduras, on October 22, 1967, the seventeenth of eighteen children. His heritage is Mexican, Honduran with a mixture of German, England and the Cayman Islands thrown together. His birth name is Ned Arnel Mencia, but he used his father’s last name until he was 18 which was Ned Holness.

Carlos was sent to Los Angeles, California where he was raised by an aunt and uncle and went on to the California State University where he majored in electrical engineering but left school to pursue a comedy career. Carlos told me in a recent interview that he was watching the news back on the mid eighties and often commented about what he observed. His co-workers thought he was funny and urged him to go to an open-mic amateur night at the Laugh Factory. The word was out around LA that there was a funny, young comedian in town which led to appearances on the Arsenio Hall Show and Buscando Estrella, where he attained International Comedy Grand Champion. In 1994 Carlos was the host of HBO’s comedy show Loco Slam. His stand up comedy act continued to gain popularity which led to his best selling comedy album, Take a Joke America, and then a series of Comedy Central Specials which led to his hosting The Mind of Mencia from 2005-2008. Mencia is also well known as the star of a series of Bud Light Super Bowl Commercials which Carlos said “My dad says to me, after watching the ads, you are somebody! The free beer helped, too!”

In talking with Carlos I get the feeling that he really loves his chosen career. He says “I can’t call it a job, I call it my luck in life.” “I love humanity. I dislike people who ruin humanity!”

Mencia says when he goes into the cocoon of a comedy club to perform, the people in the club know it is comedy, the sign above the door says it is comedy and people should expect comedy!

Carlos says his act is like a salad with different dressings on it. “Sometimes salt, sometimes pepper and sometimes no dressing at all.”

I asked about social networks like Facebook where Carlos has almost 58,000 friends and folks who “Like” him. He said he was relatively new to the site but can see the positives like fan feedback and getting known in such places as the Netherlands, and the negatives like the rare negative fan comment. Mencia says that 99% of the time people are great, but there is always that 1%.

I asked about downtime and his comment was” Downtime, what’s that? I’m in the midst of writing two movie scripts, three TV Pilots, doing stand up, and getting ready to film a stand up comedy special in July. No downtime for me!”

Mencia says he is thrilled about coming to SW Florida and Capt. Brien’s “Off the Hook” Comedy Club. He says he has been to the Miami area many times throughout his life but looks forward to coming to Marco Island and meeting all of his fans.
