The Marco Players’ production of “Erma Bombeck: At Wit’s End” is full of wit and wisdom and, when her syndicated column, “At Wit’s End” was written, it was lauded for opening up the secret world of the mother and housewife of the ‘50s to the ‘80s. Tackling topics that a homemaker routinely faced was further fueled with the attention on the Equal Rights Amendment. Bombeck’s column captured the frustrations of her generation by asking, “If life is a bowl of cherries, what am I doing in the pits?”

Allison and Margaret Engel’s script is beautifully structured with the simplicity of a one-woman show; the play allows us to see Erma (Marilyn Hilbert) interact with her children, introduce us to her husband Bill, and, in an incredibly powerful scene, realize that despite all the jokes at their expense, Erma loved her children and her husband in a very real way. Marilyn Hilbert fills Erma Bombeck’s shoes and tells the story of a very remarkable woman, feminist, journalist, humorist, mother and wife. The production is directed by Beverly Dahlstrom who says “The show is filled with joy and the spirit of a very loveable woman.”

“Erma Bombeck: At Wit’s End” is on stage November 29 – December 17 at The Marco Players Theater, Marco Town Center Mall, 1089 N. Collier Blvd., Marco Island. Shows are Wednesday – Saturday at 8 PM and Sundays at 3 PM. Attend the first week of the show and automatically be entered in a drawing to win a dinner cruise for two on The Marco Island Princess.
