A brief, ground-breaking ceremony is scheduled for the Marco Island Executive Airport Taxiway Project on Thursday, May 5 at 10:00 a.m. The ceremony will be held at the Marco Island Executive Airport, 2005 Mainsail Drive.
The public is invited to attend. One or more members of the Board of County Commissioners may be in attendance. District 1 Commissioner Donna Fiala will be attending along with representatives of the Collier County Airport Authority Advisory Board, DeAngelis Diamond Construction Inc, the general contractor, and URS Corporation, the project engineer.
“This project is a life safety issue and is of the utmost importance to the citizens of Collier County,” said Airport Authority Executive Director Chris Curry. “It is being funded primarily by a grant from the FAA along with FDOT funding and a local match and includes the construction of a parallel taxiway and the expansion of the south aircraft ramp area. When completed, this project will increase capacity and provide a safer operating environment at the airport.”
The Marco Island Executive Airport is the only airport in the state of Florida with a 5,000-foot runway that accommodates jet traffic that does not have a taxiway. Aircraft have to land and back taxi down the runway while other aircraft are waiting to land and take off. This has been a major safety concern for aircraft utilizing the Marco Island Airport.
