Prehistoric cave paintings depicted movement. In the 19th century, Impressionist Painters started to focus on the movement of the human figure on canvas. Early 20th century artists explored ways to use space, time and movement. Finally, Kinetic Art was formally established in 1955 as a diverse art period that experimented with actual and virtual movement in both two and three dimensions. This art movement has continued to thrive.

The artists featured in the show are Gary Day, Mary Day, Karla Kunzeman, Tara O’Neill and Ann Vreeland. The motion investigated in their work can be generated by air, gravity, human contact and light.

Barbara Parisi curated “Kinetics: Bodies in Motion” and said, “This exhibit is tantamount to magical moments that keep the viewers engaged and entertained. Three dimensional suspended mobiles and ‘clay creatures on the go’ percolate amidst the lively linear dimensions of stylistic prints and paintings. Fun and fantastic!”

In the La Petite Galerie, the work of Nancy Norman is on display. Nancy has been visiting Marco Island since the only way to get there was by boat or the swing bridge to Goodland! Since returning as an adult to the Island she has worked with painting in pastels, acrylics and oils. Nancy is also a member of the Art Center’s Clay Guild. She said she has “become all fired up about ceramics to apply her appreciation of color, form and design.” Her show will consist of a series of wall hangings, sculptures and functional pieces that illustrate Florida’s flora and fauna.
