The Great Backyard Bird Count

By Joan Kelly

The weekend of February 12 to 14, the National Audubon Society held the Great Backyard Bird Count together with many societies in other countries.

As birders we decide to participate for the three days. We did our birding at our favorite spots, Eagle Creek Park, Freedom Park and at home on the Isles of Capri, counting 43 species, 20 of them on Isles of Capri. We expected more on the Isles but the doves, cardinals, woodpeckers and others did not show up the day we did the count.

In the U.S., 123,004 people found 657 species, the third highest number of species among all participating countries. India recorded the most species, with Mexico having a great showing at second.
